Kids in California and Washington, DC Scream Together for Senators(Press release that follows written by Sophia, age 10, San Jose, CA)Los Gatos, CA and Washington, DCPlease join the Young Suffragists and the League of Women Voters as we plan to wrap up a fun-filled, enriching year with a Screaming for Senators ice cream party, where we will scream for 15 seconds for representation for D.C.! At the same time, a group of kids in D. C. will be screaming and having a similar event. The wonderful party takes place this Saturday, June 16, 2007, at 1:00pm Pacific, in Los Gatos, California, or at 4:00pm Eastern, in Washington, DC, with free ice cream that follows the scream! Over the year our group has learned a lot about representation, senators, government, and the USA! California and all the other states have representatives. They get elected and go to congress to vote on laws for the country and states. But Washington D. C. citizens have a large problem. Their voices are not heard and they do not have the same ability to get what they want in their own community. This is because they don’t have voting representation in Congress. Our D. C. Democracy project went to many field trips through the year to learn about government and our country. We started our class with an engaging reading time where we studied how women fought so they could vote like men. We also saw a lot of people take their US citizenship oaths after years of tests and hard work. After that we got to visit two city halls; one in San Jose and one in Saratoga. Then we went to Congressman and representative from California Mike Honda’s office. He told us all about his life before he was elected, and also about his job today. I thought it was very interesting that he had been a teacher. He was friendly toward both children and adults.
